A brief history

The department of epidemiology was founded in 1967. During the years 1967-1990 the head of the department and its founder was Eli Nahum Sleahov – doctor of medicine, professor, Honorary Citizen, author of over 400 scientific works, including 23 monographs and books, 8 inventions including preparations „Antraxin” and „Tetanin”, the president of the Scientific Society of Epidemiologists, Microbiologists and Parasitologists of the Republic of Moldova.

Since June 1990, the Department of Epidemiology is headed by Viorel Ion Prisacari – Doctor of medicine, professor, Honorary Citizen, corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova and Romania, author of 350 scientific works, including 7 books and 8 monographs, 30 patents of invention, medalist of the WIPO. Since 1990 he is the President of the Scientific Society of Epidemiologists, Microbiologists and Parasitologists of the Republic of Moldova and chief specialist in the field of epidemiology of the Ministry of Health.

Syllabi in epidemiology for various faculties and specialties are developed according to the specificity of future medical activity and they differ in volume and issues studied.

Syllabi include the following sections:

  • „General epidemiology of infectious and non-infectious diseases”;
  • „Special epidemiology of infectious and non-infectious diseases”:
  • „The epidemiological diagnostic”;
  • „The basis of epidemiological surveillance of infectious and non-infectious diseases”;
  • „Types of epidemiological studies”;
  • „Epidemiology of disasters”;
  • „Health promotion”.

The Department of Epidemiology is provided with thematic classrooms. Chisinau Municipal Centre of Public Health, National Centre of Public Health, Ialoveni and Edinet local public health centers are practical (clinical) base for department of Epidemiology.

The teaching staff of the department of epidemiology consists of highly qualified specialists: a university professor, 5 associate professors, 3 lecturers, 2 doctoral students. In the department of Epidemiology there is a scientific laboratory „Epidemiology of nosocomial infections” where 5 employees researches work.

For the last 10 years the employees of the department of epidemiology have participated in 5 scientific forums: Congress V and VI of Hygienists, Epidemiologists and Microbiologists in Moldova (2003, 2008), Scientific Conference „Improving epidemiological surveillance” (2006), Scientific Conference „Optimization of epidemiological surveillance of nosocomial infections” (2012), Scientific-practical Seminar „Epidemiological surveillance and control of nosocomial infections” (2012).
